Project Candlelight
The road to recovery after a sexual assault can be a dark and frightening one. "Project Candle" showcases the photography of undergraduate student Bridget Hayes as she shines a light on healing after trauma. "Shining a Light" takes you though the exhibit as Bridget conveys the stories of survivors. The dim light of the room allows viewers to be engulfed by the power of the messages of "It's not your fault" and "I am not broken; I am brave". These are the battle-cries of people who will not be overcome by their trauma and will fight everyday to make themselves whole again with time and love.
Bridget created this project as part of her FYCARE class. "FYCARE" stands for First Year Campus Acquaintance Rape Education. This program holds workshops that lead an interactive discuss about rape and sexual assault. These workshops are mandatory for first year students. "Project Candle" was meant "to give a voice to survivors who are so often voiceless" said Bridget. The exhibit will be available until the end of April in the Women's Resource Center.

One Community, One Goal: Support the Survivors
Sexual Assault Awareness month is not just about making the facts known about sexual assault. It's about communities coming together to support one another and especially those who have fallen and survived assaults. During the entire month of April, the Women's Resource Center partnered with different organizations to host many events that showcased all facets of sexual assault. From how sexual assault investigations are conducted by authorities to how to support all survivors no matter their sex or gender, this month has been full of educational conversation as well as words of love and support.
The subject of conversation for many events was how to support the survivors. One event, "It Happens Here" featured different written works by survivors. They could either ready their own work or have it read by someone else to remain anonymous. While the stories told were heartbreaking for the listeners, they were also lined with moments of empowerment as the authors state they will not take the title of "victim," but "survivor" as they will heal with time and become stronger than ever.
